Not your normal adoption...

Our local shelter posted this poor senior guy:

We posted his photo asking if anyone wanted to foster him and let him live out his days in their home. Several very kind people offered to take him in and we processed applications and decided on the one we thought was the best fit, Lori of Sunkissed Acres Equine Rescue
. He was named George and I went to visit him at the shelter. He was so much worse in person and I realized he most likely had days left, not weeks. From experience, my best guess was he was suffering from kidney failure.

Hope the 3 legged pit bull, rescued after being pushed out of a car

Last week we got a call from a lady in East Atlanta that witnessed, along with several other neighbors, a pit bull being pushed out of a car into traffic. The scared and confused dog ran up to passing cars trying to get in. Witnesses noticed she only had 3 legs. A neighbor decided to take the dog home. She brought her up to meet me and I noticed she had a spay scar and tattoo. She was extremely sweet and happy to be loved on. I estimated her to be about 2-3 years old and she looked healthy, but they said she was covered in fleas and ticks when they found her.

What to do if you find a dog

-Most rescues are full right now, because of the poor economy and how many people are becoming backyard breeders to make a quick buck. The number of unwanted pets is the highest it's ever been. People aren't buying dogs, but that doesn't stop the backyard breeders from continuing to breed unwanted litters. Many times, they end up surrendering the puppies to shelters after not being able to sell them. This is especially true for pit bulls, which as you can see by visiting any shelter.

Norma Jean

On March 1, we came home to two stray dogs on our front porch. One was a white pit bull mix and the other one was a German Shepherd Dog mix. The pit bull was super sweet and just rolled over on her belly. We put slipped a leash on her and tried to get the other dog, but it was extremely aggressive. The dog finally took off running and we lost sight. We assumed the GSD must have been a male since the pit bull was in heat.
Legally, all found dogs have to go to animal control so that the owners have a chance to reclaim them.

First day of our new internship program!

Sunday, March 25, 2012

So yesterday, I told Karree to be at our house at 10:30 am sharp to start his internship. His mom told me he was so excited and sure enough there was a knock on the door at 10:25. When I opened the door I was surprised to see Karree had another younger boy with him. He introduced me to his cousin Steve and explained that he was in charge of watching him today and he wanted to know if he could come with us. Since Steve is only 11, I told him I would have to get a volunteer release form signed by one of his parents.

Update on Diamond & her owner

In order to understand this update you need to read these two blog posts:

Diamond and the puppies are doing great! We got an extra large dog bed for her and she immediately put all of her babies in there. She also got a Kong, an antler, and a stuffed marrow bone. She is one happy dog!
I was really troubled by the confrontation I had Saturday with the man in the parking lot.

What a day, what a day....

March 17, 2012, St. Patrick's Day:
This morning my day started off with trying to help animal control with a pack of stray dogs that have become aggressive and neighbors have been calling them daily for the past few weeks. After we were able to set a trap, the AC officer got a call about 2 abandoned pit bulls at a vacant house just a block away. He asked if I wanted to come with him, so we hopped in the truck and headed that way. All of a sudden my gut told me it was probably the dogs belonging to Karree, the 15 year-old that had come by our house earlier in the week, I told the officer about that situation, you can read that story here:

We want to help this teen and his dogs

So this morning we get an unexpected knock on the door. I look out the blinds and see a young teen there with a pit bull. I ask him what he wants and he asks if I'm the lady that does pit bull rescue. I take a deep breath knowing this is probably not going to be good news and I open the door. We sit on the front porch and he tells me he needs to give away 11 pit bull puppies that are only two weeks old immediately.
Two weeks ago, I got a call from Kate who is the local director of the Coalition to Unchain Dogs.

Yes, a dog can get pregnant at 6 months old.

This morning we headed out the door at 7am to help transport four owned pit bulls toLifeline Spay & Neuter Clinic in College Park

The owners were very kind people who loved their four pit bulls, but after hearing the story of how they came to acquire their dogs, I thought it needed to be shared. Here's a photo of two of the pit bulls in our car (it's not a very good photo because it was dark and taken with a camera phone):

To start with, they had one male pit bull that was not neutered.
