Norma Jean

On March 1, we came home to two stray dogs on our front porch. One was a white pit bull mix and the other one was a German Shepherd Dog mix. The pit bull was super sweet and just rolled over on her belly. We put slipped a leash on her and tried to get the other dog, but it was extremely aggressive. The dog finally took off running and we lost sight. We assumed the GSD must have been a male since the pit bull was in heat.
Legally, all found dogs have to go to animal control so that the owners have a chance to reclaim them. We also believe that if an owner doesn't find their dog, they will just go out and get another one. We try to break the cycle by finding the owners and helping them become more responsible pet parents. She didn't look like she was in too bad of shape except for some old scars on her face and a horrible rust stain around her neck where she had been chained. My friend Erica at Fulton County Animal Services took some photos of her so we could work on finding her owners and/or a foster home.
Our friends Paul and Erica at animal control said that she was extremely sweet, but unfortunately because of the scars on her face, she was put in the dreaded Barn at the shelter. Dogs that are placed in The Barn at the shelter are not allowed to be adopted out, that means they are euthanized wants their time is up unless their owners reclaim them. All pit bulls with scars are put in The Barn in case they were used were fighting.

The employees helped buy her some time since they knew we were working on finding her owners or a foster home. Every time we would visit her she would wag her tail like crazy and just fall over on her back so we would rub her belly. We knew she was too sweet and special to let her perish there.

The day before she was scheduled to finally be euthanized (2 weeks after her time was actually up), we had an awesome couple offer to foster her. They had several mutual friends that gave them excellent references and they had one other dog they had adopted from our friends at Atlanta Underdog Initiative. A few months ago they lost everything including their 3 beloved dogs in a house fire.  We were extremely touched they were offering to foster Norma Jean after experiences such a tragedy. We knew she would get so much love with them.
After making all of the arrangements and letting FCAS know to go ahead and fully vet her because we had a foster home, we were contacted by a neighbor saying they knew where her owner lived. We had given up on finding her owner at this point, but I went to the house which was only a block from ours and sure enough the other dog we had originally found her with but had been unable to catch was running around the yard. Several neighbors confirmed that the lady had a white female pit bull that had recently run away. They told us the pit bull had been kept on a heavy, short chain meant for towing cars. They said the other dog constantly attacked her and they would hear Norma Jean (formerly Sugar) crying all night long. I knocked on the door, but no one answered so I left a note that her dog was at animal control and I asked the neighbors to please have her call me. FCAS also left her a note. The owner never came forward.

We had Norma Jean spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and of course she was heartworm positive. After 30 days of being on Doxy, she was treated for heartworms on April 18th. She will be on movement restriction until May 30th. She is doing amazing in her foster home! Here is an update from her foster mom: "Norma Jean (sometimes dubbed Normi) is the sweetest little girl and all she wants is to be loved on. She is a quick learner and is great with going in and out of her crate. She loves toys and can entertain herself for hours! Over time she has learned to make friends with our pit bull mix but I think she would prefer to have all of the attention to herself. She's going to be perfect for a family who only wants one dog and is looking for a relaxed yet playful dog who will really do anything to please her human!"
